Adding Stretch to Your Routine
Yes, I can do the splits and I am flexible. But this flexibility didn’t just come; I worked for it. Not only did I take a stretch class that was part of my dance training as a teenager, but I would stretch every day, before class and after class. Stretching, however, is not something that only dancers, runners or gymnasts need to do. Stretching is something that should be done by everyone every day. In barre class, we work each individual muscle group until it is completely fatigued. We are getting stronger, yes, but it is just as important to stretch those muscles too; flexibility is just as important as strength. Without flexibility, the muscles shorten, become tight and then they are actually weaker. They are weak because they are unable to extend all the way, and can cause joint pain, strains and muscle damage. On our class schedule, we have a Stretch Classes offered approximately 2-3 times a week. But it is important to stretch every day. In our classes, you will see we work a muscle group and then stretch it, and we have two longer stretch series in class as well. However, I truly think this is not enough. So here is my plan for you; so that you can continue to build strength and flexibility and stay feeling young as long as possible.
- Take your barre class 3 times a week
- Your 4th class in a week should be a stretch class (even if just our 35 minute express stretch)
- Before class, do a few stretches; one for your hamstrings, one for hip flexors and one for glutes. For example; fold over and hang to stretch back of the body for as long as 4 deep inhales and exhales. Pull forward to a runners lunge to open up the front side of your body. Again hold for 4 deep breathes. End on your back with a figure four. You will feel so energized for class, just try it and see.
- After class, or before bed, pick another 3 stretches. It can be the same routine or pick another one you do in class. If you own a roller, roll your muscles to feel extra long and then do your stretches.
