BE SMART! Goal Setting.

We just finished our favorite 3 month unlimited program called Burn at the Barre summer challenge.   We learned all about ourselves, our fitness habits, and our motivating factors. When I spoke to many of you to find out what motivated you this summer, we heard, “$4 a week”. Some loved putting up those “star stickers” and others just had a true fitness goal of feeling stronger and losing inches.  And then someone asked about another challenge and I thought let’s “RAISE THE BARRE”!! It’s time for each individual to set a goal; not just any goal but an attainable one.  So with this new challenge I wanted to give you the opportunity to do something that works for your schedule so that vacations, soccer games and “life” will not interfere. So no more excuses beautiful barre ladies! Set your goal for any 30 day period to accomplish either 25, 20, 15, or 10 classes.

“How should you set your goal? BE SMART.”

In my first “sales” job out of college, goal setting was an integral part of our every day routine.  Before we would go into the field, we partnered with a friend and picked 5 goals for the day.  We had to pick “SMART” goals. What does SMART stand for?

  1. Specific. In order for a goal to be specific, you must be able to answer the 5 W’s, who, what, where, when and why? So don’t just say, I want to get in shape! Say I want to get in shape by taking the Raise the Barre challenge and come to class; and more “specifically”,  I will come to class 20 times from September 3rd-October 2nd on Monday, Wednesday and Friday so that I can build the strength to hold 60 second plank. Get it?
  2. Measurable. In order to measure your “getting in shape goal” ask some “how” questions, such as how long will it take for me to reach 10 classes and thus 20? How will I fit this fitness class into my routine now?
  3. Attainable. Set goals that are plausible. Don’t say that you will do a whole class without any breaks when you just started working out! Go for something you know you can accomplish but something more challenging than what you have done over the summer. Did you take just the minimum of 4 classes per week to get your $4? Well, challenge yourself and take 5 classes a week and reach those 20 classes! You will feel that much stronger.
  4. Realistic. The goals must be realistic in that you know you can achieve them and you are willing to make the sacrifices to reach them.
  5. Timely. The goal needs to be within a specific time frame so it doesn’t go on forever. Have an end date.

So in our RAISE THE BARRE FALL CHALLENGE, we did a lot of the work for you. We have a “black barre” -(stick painted black). We have the 4 goals of how many classes you decide to take and you get to pick the 30 days that you will accomplish this goal. But what I didn’t put on there is what happens when you take these classes; by entering our Raise the Barre Challenge, you will get into a sense of routine, inches will be lost, strength will be formed.

But I have one more thing I would like for you to do when you take this challenge. Please write down 5 things that you want to accomplish and BE SMART. Think about 5 more SMART goals besides the number of classes that you want to take. Whatever it is, share it with a partner, instructor, friend or even write it on your “barre”.

As always, we want you to “Be Your Better Self” at the Barre + Beyond!

All M.O.M.S Love,

Orlee
