What are Isometric Exercises?
Isometric movements are the main focus of barre class. We hear about “isometrics”, but what does that actually mean? I will be brief and simple in my explanation. There are three types of muscle movement; concentric, eccentric and isometric. Concentric movement is the shortening of the muscle. The Eccentric movement is the lengthening of the muscle. Isometric is the hold of the muscle. The true definition; Isometrics are static contractions of one particular muscle group. The movements strengthen and tone the muscle without changing the muscle length and the joint stays in the same position throughout the exercise. This is your HOLD in class. For example, we might say “lift and hold”.
That “hold” is the squeeze of the muscle; the isometric contraction.
The beauty of isometrics is that it is the least stressful on your joints and muscles and has a rehabilitative quality to the exercise themselves. At anytime, don’t be fooled about holding a pose. The hold of the pose is still quite difficult and a great way to build strength and tone.
