The Power of Pilates
At M.O.M.s, we have taken the best from Pilates, Ballet, and Stretch and Conditioning to create an hour long workout, ultimately resulting in a long lean physique. So let’s talk about Pilates! What are the top three benefits of Pilates that we have integrated into a M.O.M.s Method workout:
1. Core Strengthening:
Many of the movements in Pilates place the strongest emphasis on the core. The core is the entire area from the ribcage down to the hip joints around to the base of the glutes, around the lower back and even down into the pelvic girdle. Once the core is strong, the rest of the body can move freely, yet maintaining alignment and ultimately preventing injury as we strengthen other muscle groups in the body. In a Pilates class, one will learn to engage the core as a basic first step before any other movement. At M.O.M.s Method, we take this principal and apply to the entire class as well. From the warm-up in arms all the way to the “core” work at the end, the core is ALWAYS engaged, with the belly pulled in, ribcage relaxed, and tailbone down. Start with engaging the core and the rest of the exercises in a M.O.M.s Class will be even more effective.
2. Mind-Body Connection:
Well, its our tagline; Strong Body + Strong Mind. Joseph Pilates began what he called, “contrology”. It is the power of the mind that Pilates taps into. The movements require concentration, control and precision. In a Pilates class, one will learn to use the power of the mind to control the body and its movements. At M.O.M.s we take this Mind-Body Connection and intensify it as the movements become smaller and even more precise as we burn out each individual muscle group. The mind is a powerful being and find that connection with our bodies.
3. Creating Balance
In Pilates, the movements are controlled and when combined with the power of the mind and the correct breath, there is a beautiful flow to each move. This flow creates length, strength and balance in the muscles. In a Pilates class, one will work on creating a flow to each exercise, ultimately creating that long lean physique. As the entire body is conditioned, the strength is balanced which truly sets this conditioning form of exercise apart from other fitness techniques. This balance actually reduces the risk of injury and corrects alignment imbalances. At M.O.M.s, we take this principle of flow and balanced strength and apply to each exercise so that this total body workout will help reduce the risk of injury.
With the core strengthening aspect, along with the mind-body connection and creating balance, it only makes sense to incorporate the best of Pilates into a M.O.M.s Class. Whether you are solely a M.O.M.s goer, or a cross trainer with Barre, TRX, Yoga, or running, we encourage everyone to take a true Pilates class and make it a part of their fitness routine. The balance that it will provide is unique.
At M.O.M.s, we are bringing you a Pilates Workshop on November 5th at 6:30 am (a 45 minute class perfect for early risers to balance and lengthen their body before the workday or a run) and a 4:45pm class (an hour long class perfect for those who want to tap into their core before a M.O.M.s class).
