The Value of You!
The Value of You.
Finding your “Margaret Mead”
I was home over winter break at my parent’s house in Maryland and read to Lana one of my favorite children’s books, The Value Tales, a series of Non-Fiction Children’s stories. I pulled out the story about Margaret Mead, the Anthropologist. Her “value” is the value of understanding. Ms. Mead was such a strong woman, an inspiration. She had a desire to learn more about people and left her family to follow her dream. She visited different remote islands and learned about how they lived. She didn’t criticize what they did, she watched and she listened and she learned.
“She didn’t criticize what they did, she watched and she listened and she learned.”
Her objective was to understand what makes someone “happy” by studying their lifestyle. And because she was a good listener, these communities found ways to change for the better and improve their quality of life. So you are probably asking why do I bring up this Value Tale from my childhood or this story about Margaret Mead? Well it’s because I think we all need a “Margaret Mead” in our lives; someone to listen, to observe, to understand and to help us be better.

It was one year ago, today, I officially opened the doors of M.O.M.s Method, {Mind Over Matter Studio}, your boutique fitness studio that NWI has never seen. One year ago, our facebook post was of me in the splits with tiny 6 week-old Liza in my arms. That post got a record number of likes, over 1000 I believe. Still waiting for another one of those viral posts.
As a business owner, there are many things to think about on a daily basis and then add on top of that “Life”; nursing, carpool, after-school activities, dinner, laundry, scheduling play dates, and even Thank You notes. I sometimes think I am crazy. Well, maybe I am crazy but I’d like to find another word to describe it. Hopefully it will come to me as I write this blog today.
I had a dream and I just had to go for it. It was my dream to open my own studio, and with the support of my wonderful husband and a fabulous motivating team (shout out to Elizabeth, Rachel S., Natalie and Calla for starters) and my fans from day one (shout out to Melanie, Julie, Raechel and Jennifer) I did just that. In one year, a lot has happened.
“I had a dream and I just had to go for it.”
I could rehash all of the details of all the great things we have accomplished. Instead, at one year, my focus is on where I can get better. But first, I need to look deeper and see where my faults are, accept them and then I can move forward. It’s a hard process because nobody wants to talk about their weaknesses or their vulnerabilities. But with a “Margaret Mead”, I can do it. I know I have Chad, my parents, Lana and my team here at M.O.M.s who can help me get better and make M.O.M.s even better than last year.
So today, find your Margaret Mead, a family member, a friend, a fellow M.O.M.s goer and go sit down at Third Coast, talk about your faults, your weaknesses and your vulnerabilities. I promise that person will listen and it will only make you better today than you were yesterday. Cheers to a better year than last year! Oh and I still haven’t found my word to describe the “crazy”…follow our M.O.M.s Method blog next week and maybe it will come to me.
Lots of M.O.M.s Love,
Orlee
