What you Learn from Coming to Barre
I had the honor to work with some of your beautiful children on Tuesday. Barre is not a typical “kids class” but there is so much to learn from “Barre” and group fitness classes in general. Why not start at a young age, like any other sport?
My main goal for the kids class was to have these children work hard on something and have a good time. So I started class with asking each child to introduce themselves and say why they decided to come to class. We then worked on a few basic barre moves, from upper body to core and legs. At the end of the class, I gave everyone a “goal” book. I want them to think a little about class, and maybe even to set goals for themselves. My hope is that they learn something besides the usual I workout to just get fit. As adult women, we have many things we can benefit from by coming to barre so hopefully our kids will too. Here is my list of what you and your kids can learn from barre;
1. Setting goals: The idea of setting a goal is actually a hard one. It takes time and a level of maturity to be able to set goals properly. However, just the idea of talking about it at a young age in the context of a fitness class will benefit your children AND YOU! We can talk more about goal setting as we approach the New Year Resolution time.
2. Body awareness: At a young age, building positive body awareness is crucial. Learning about your body as it grows and changes is important for our young girls; and even more so to learn to control the body, work on posture and build confidence. This type of body awareness is something we should stress at a young age and start now.
3. Positivity So building positive body awareness goes in hand with this next item on my list. “Positivity” in general. I hope to provide a positive environment for our young ones (AND US ADULTS). We strive to be a place with sales where we support each other and are comfortable around each other. No matter the age, the fitness level or ability, we welcome all and want to keep a positive environment for our children and ourselves to come to. In this day in age, this is almost the number one goal of the studio!
4. Physical strength It goes without saying that coming to barre builds physical strength. This physical strength is so important for women as our bodies change in every stage of life. Build that strength and maintain it.
5. Mental strength Lastly, the beauty of barre is that we also build mental strength. Even when we think we cannot do something, our positive environment inspires us to work harder and achieve the things that our mind believes we cannot do. So my last goal for our children and for us is to build a toughness that we carry from barre class into our daily lives as we interact with our peers at school or work.
I am sure we all have our reasons for coming to Barre + Beyond and for bringing our children to class too. I hope these are some of the reasons you do come to class and if you have yet to come to a class, maybe this will inspire you to make a change for the better. Be your better self at the barre and beyond!
