Runner? Why Cross Train at Barre + Beyond
Runner? Why cross train at Barre + Beyond
For the past few days of nice weather, more people have been trying to get outside before the snow comes back. So as you plan your 5K’s, Half and Full Marathons or even that triathlon for the spring and summer season, I want you to know why Barre is the best cross training workout for you. Now, I have to be honest; I am not a runner. As a dancer growing up, I was completely prohibited from running as it created muscles that dancer did not aim for. I am 100% a Barre girl. However, I understand that this is not the norm and most people cross train to help prevent injury. So runners, why cross train with Barre.
Here are 4 simple reasons why your day off should be at the barre: (there are more…but we’ll start with these)
1. Low impact. Running is continuous impact step after step. With a no impact option, Barre gives those joints a break while continuing to strengthen.
2. Core strength. Without a doubt, core strength is important for runners. Runners know they should work the core but it is often ignored but when the core is strong, the rest of the limbs will move with ease. Many runners run faster when their core is strong.
3. Flexibility. I always hear, I’m not flexible so I won’t be able to do barre. Well, that is the point to come to barre class. We will strengthen the muscles and then lengthen them. Hamstrings get tight with running and so do hip flexors. Let’s keep the body balanced and enjoy the 2 main stretch sections of class.
4. Full body workout. As runners, often parts of the body are forgotten; not just the core as mentioned earlier, but upper body, and even seat. It may come to a surprise to many, but runners have weak glutes because many runners compensate their weak glutes with over use of hamstrings; and then we know what those tight hamstrings cause- knee pain or lower back pain. Let’s even out the workout.
Overall, balance is key to a healthy body. Take that time out of your running regimen to work out at the barre. If you are skeptical, just try adding barre class once or twice a week. We also offer a full hour of stretching; add that in and you will see the difference. I look forward to your feedback.
