How To Get the Most Out of Your Barre Class

We hear this phrase all the time… “set your intention for your class”. But what does that mean? I think the first thing to think about, is why do we come to Barre + Beyond? What are we looking to get out of class? Listen, it is different for everyone; whether is it is get stronger, to just start moving, to run a marathon, to just have an hour to yourself… whatever it is, that’s your reason you walk through the door. But I want you to also take a moment between warm-up and our first exercise (which is usually a plank, c-curve or flat back) to focus. This is your chance to actually think about how your class will be. Here are my tips so that you DO get the most out your class and your time at the barre.

1.Give yourself time. Remember to come early enough in order to get a little extra stretch or roll before your class. I know, personally, when I take that little extra time, it makes a difference for my class. It gives me a time to get in tune with my muscles and my body.

2. Focus on your body. This is your class and your time to work on YOU. Try not to think about what happened earlier, what’s going to happen later or whatever else is worrying your mind. Put your mind on your muscles. The deep ones. Even if you have no idea what we are taking about, try to envision it. “MIND OVER MATTER”

3. Form first. Take your time. Remember that this your class and you just listen to your body. Even when we have you try something new, or more complex, remember, it’s ok to stop and keep it simple. Sometimes it’s ok to go back to basics. We offer basics classes every Monday, Wednesday at 5Pm and Friday at 8:30AM and Saturday at 9:30. This is your chance to go back to fundamentals. But let’s say you are in a Mixed-Level Class or even a more complex BARRE+ class, remember to take it back to form first.

4. Keep the distractions to a minimum. Keep your phone out of the room (we understand sometimes, that’s not an option) but if you can keep it away from the studio. If you find yourself using studio time to catch up with friends, remember that it may distract others around you. Now listen, we are a pretty friendly studio, and sometimes we just can’t help ourselves, I get it!! but again, if we go back to #1, use the rolling out time before class to catch up so that class time can be #2.

Hope these are friendly tips and even just reminders of how to get back to our time at the studio. When we work hard on our body every day, it is amazing how we feel so accomplished and refreshed after a great workout!

Keep it up ladies! And always know that we are here for you!
