Orlee’s “How to Read Package Labels”

A big thank you goes out to Debbie from Wholesome Cupboard for bringing samples of her wholesome fig and blueberry bars last Wednesday.  We enjoyed the bars, but I mostly enjoyed the conversation that it stirred.  We started to discuss what is healthy and what is not healthy. What should we look for in ingredients? What should we look at when we look at the labels? I am not an expert by any means, but I have my few quick guidelines when you get a hold of these packaged bars.

  1.  If you cannot pronounce a word in the ingredients, it’s probably not good for you.

2. Look at how many calories are from fat. If it seems high, it is also probably a good idea to steer clear.

3.  Check the calorie intake. If you are looking to lose or control your weight, it is best to snack on low-calorie foods and leave the larger calorie intake for meal time. Grab an apple instead.

4. Realize you don’t know everything. Ask an expert in the field. Questions are good.

5. Everything is OK in moderation. At least I think so! We are only human.

Again, thank you Debbie for stopping by.  I love your store and the items you have in there. We look forward to the pop-up class and COOKING LESSON on October 17th at Wholesome Cupboard.
