Perfect Form at the Barre: Chair

At M.O.M.s Method Chair is one of our favorite exercises because the results it gives are amazing! Chair helps to strengthen and tone the thighs, as well as tighten your core and improve posture.   While we are always changing the moves we do in class to keep your muscles guessing, you can count on doing Chair pretty often! Form is very important here at M.O.M.s, so we want to share some tips on how to do the PERFECT Chair!

Let’s start from the bottom. Begin with your toes touching the baseboard.  Next, firmly grip the barre and pull straight back as you sit down until your thighs are parallel to the floor, just like you’re sitting down in a real chair. Now check your hips, they should be directly under your shoulders with a nice flat back and neutral spine. We don’t want any slumping backs or shoulders!  Then check your posture, make sure your shoulders are back and pressed down away from your ears. Finally, open your chest and lift your chin so you can read a few motivational sayings above the barre. And, voila, you are now in a perfect Chair!

Of course, the only way to stay in this beautiful form is by engaging your CORE! This will help keep your upper body from straining and make it easier to hold onto the barre.  So zip it in ladies, engage that CORE the whole time you are in class!!
