I am very proud of our Share Barre Love initiative; our community service outreach program. We started small and provided meals for new mothers or families going through a  hard time. The initiative expanded with our walks to support local charities such as the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and American Heart Association.  This year we started working hand in hand with our local Housing Opportunities to help combat homelessness in our area and especially to help single women. This month we are collecting cleaning supplies and yet again we will reach out and paint the new Park Place building next Tuesday from 11-1.  Last but not least, I am personally donating my time to dance and fundraise for the Duneland YMCA’s Dancing Like the Stars to help our local community. If you still want to come, it will be an awesome night at Blue Chip Casino and I have some seats available!

So overall, I love how involved we are with the community to make a difference. But something clicked the other day as I was flying home from my Disney vacation. I am sitting in the middle  seat between my two girls. Both immediately fall asleep on my lap even  before we take off.  The flight attendent is doing her thing that she always does; demonstrating how to put a seatbelt on and discussing emergency water landing protocols. After she demonstrates the emergency oxygen mask, she comes over to me and says “Put your mask on first before assisting your children”.  Yes. In order to help my children, I need to be breathing. It makes perfect sense. But as women, it is our instinct to help our children first and put ourselves second. But no, why should it be any different in every day life compared to life and death situations?

How are we to help our children or even broader our community if we have not helped ourselves?

So ladies, I urge you to be empowered to take care of yourself first. Don’t feel that momma guilt. Know that you are benefiting your children, your family and the community by YOU committing to yourself.  Get back on your schedule. Make a change for yourself and then everything else will line up. When we feel empowered , we can do so much more others.  So yesterday we voted; voting as a right and a privilege to better this country. Well,  I am voting for YOU; for your to be better.  You are more important than anyone else right now. Tell yourself that and treat yourself with the respect that you deserve. I vote for you.

As always, Sharing Barre Love,

Orlee
